The Spanish language is used by roughly 470 million native speakers worldwide, making it second only to Mandarin in the number of native speakers. It is a Romance Language, meaning that it is based on the language of Rome: Latin. More so than many Romance Languages, Spanish draws heavily from its roots in Latin, but also has a number of notable influences from the Basque in the northern region of the country and also several Arabic words from the period in which the region was under Moorish control.
Due to aggressive colonial expansion during the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, there are a number of countries around the world that speak Spanish as their native language, most notably the majority of Central and South America, the Caribbean, and the Philippines. The language also brought with it much of the Spanish culture that was then adapted to the area and developed into several unique post-colonial traditions.
Castillian is the most popular dialect spoken in Spain due to the power of the Kingdom of Castille in earlier periods. It is so popular, in fact, that it threatens to eliminate other languages not only in Spain, but also in several parts of Latin America.
